Surface Roughness Analysis of Medical Implants

Modern medicine puts high demands on the surface properties of implants. The surfaces of implants are often structured by means of blasting or etching or chemically conditioned with the aid of conditioning solution to enable an optimal integration of the implant into the bone. Optical profiling makes it possible to investigate the surface roughness of structured surfaces, according to standard parameters.

In the example a dental implant was investigated and the roughness values in the grooves and on the ridges were compared. It turns out that the average roughness (Ra) is less in the grooves than on the ridges.
