Analytical service in life sciences is challenging due to the combination of different biomaterials and water-based biological systems, which are difficult to analyse with characterisation techniques that require vacuum. On the one hand biocompatible materials can consist of specifically tailored metals, ceramics or polymers. On the other hand the analyst has to deal with damageable tissues or single cell cultures. The following analytical issues were successfully addressed:

  • Surface composition of implants (stents, screws)
  • Characterisation of sterile liquids
  • Surface chemistry of wound dressings
  • Identification of particles and debris in hollow needles
  • Analysis of sterile scalpel blades
  • Characterisation of bleedings on endoscopic fibres
  • Lateral distribution of biomolecules (lipids, amino acids) in chemically fixed single cells and non-fixed tissues
