Because of their optical, mechanical and thermal properties glasses are widely used. These properties can be adapted to the actual application by a targeted variation in the chemical composition (e.g. by doping with other elements) or by deposition of metal layers. The use of chemically or topographically sensitive analytical methods is very important in these developments, but also in the analysis of failures.
